State Library Victoria today announced a partnership with online publishing start-up Tablo to develop Tablo Communities, an innovative new platform that supports emerging Victorian writers, connecting them with other writers, readers, industry experts and potential publishers.
The partnership was announced today by Tablo creator Ash Davies and State Library Director, Justine Hyde, at a Digital Writers Festival event on writers and publishing in the digital age.
Due to launch this summer, the State Library Tablo Community will be the first of its kind featuring authors-in-residence and industry experts to provide advice, motivation, writing techniques and editing tips, and a space for people to connect.
Justine Hyde said the partnership reflects the rise in popularity and success of self-published works and provides a forum to support authors publishing and promoting their own work.
“Some of the biggest selling books of the early 21st century began as self-published works which shows how much the traditional publishing model is changing. Digital writing communities are also growing as we have seen with thousands of people participating in November’s National Novel Writing Month.
“The State Library is partnering with Tablo to support the creation of new Victorian writing and to add it to the State collection.
“The State Library Tablo Community connects writers and readers with the Library, other local writers and industry experts and creates a space to discuss the writing craft, reader feedback, industry tips and contacts and anything that helps connect writers with readers.
“The Library has been a home to generations of Australian writers, this partnership continues that tradition and builds on it for the future.”
Ash Davies says Tablo Communities allows libraries to transition into the self-publishing age and provide their own members with a space to connect.
“The State Library has been an incredible pioneer in embracing self-publishing and pushing industry forward. Together we’ve created something that we expect to be the model of how libraries connect with writers and readers in the future.”
