Since launching in September 2009, the Library’s new-generation Search service has been enabling our users to find collection items in one easy search. Although our previous search tool, the Classic catalogue, has remained available, its older technology is not able to offer the same, easy-to-use features as our newer, more powerful online catalogue. To provide our users with the best possible search experience we have decided to retire the Classic catalogue and focus our resources on the Search service.

Therefore, from 5.30pm on Thursday 2 August 2012, the Classic catalogue will no longer be available. Library users will instead be directed to our new-generation Search service. If you currently use our Classic catalogue, we encourage you to start using the Search service now and take advantage of its user-friendly search facility. If you have saved any items into your list, you will need to recreate the list in the Search interface.

Our Search service provides extensive options for limiting search results, and suggests related resources and other relevant searches. Users can also keep their own records, save search results, store items for later use and add notes. Those who sign in using their Library barcode can comment on collection items and tag items. Users can also find articles, searching across a range of eresources at the same time.

Recently added features include:

  • larger thumbnails that link directly to digitised images
  • tabs that enable users to view the details of a record and make requests without leaving their search results page
  • more options for precise searching – users can search specific fields like the publisher name or the place a newspaper was published
  • a calendar that makes requesting items quick and simple
  • a new Quick article search that searches across numerous online journals and magazines and returns results in record time
  • improved article database searching that allows users to create a custom set of sources to search

For help using our online catalogue, please contact us on 03 8664 7002 during Library opening hours. Alternatively, you can use our Feedback form.
