I am pleased to announce the launch of the State Library’s Annual Appeal. This year the Library has the opportunity to acquire three amazing items on behalf of all Victorians.

As Giving Manager at the Library, I am excited to be working with the team on the Annual Appeal. I know that many of you will feel the immediate connection to your own childhood that I experienced when you hear what we are raising funds for.

Original Blinky Bill illustrations

Dorothy Wall’s utterly charming Blinky Bill illustrations are as appealing today as ever. These books have always spoken with a uniquely Australian voice to children all over the country. It is important that this set of 36 illustrations gets the tender care of our Conservation team, so we can preserve and share them with you.

Rare first edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Lewis Carroll’s sequel Through the Looking Glass was gifted to the Library five years ago and a rare first edition of Alice is now available. This would be the perfect addition to our History of the Book collection. Interestingly, as well as Through the Looking Glass, our collection of Carroll’s works includes his books on mathematics.

Papers of award-winning author Sonya Hartnett

Since 1999 the Library has been building a major archive of Melbourne author Sonya Hartnett’s career. I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s important to record the creative journey of our storytellers and maintain a commitment to Australian writers. Hartnett has become an author of international standing in the young adult genre, and with her novel Golden Boys, for adults.
