On Saturday 18 February, Melbourne will be wowed by an epic underwater adventure set against the State Library’s magnificent domed reading room as part of White Night Melbourne.

Titled Seadragon’s Lair, this specially commissioned light projection of underwater cinematography by aquatic scientist and raconteur Sheree Marris will be set to alluring soundscapes by sound artist Lisa Greenaway to immerse audiences in the spectacular seascapes of Port Philip Bay.

This customised 360-degree video piece using 3D projection mapping will transform the iconic dome into a kaleidoscope of colours. The artwork will feature the unique and remarkable marine life in Port Philip Bay – from sponge gardens and kelp forests to vibrant nudibranch and jewel-like sea dragons.

“Port Phillip Bay is Melbourne’s best kept marine secret. The bay is a stunning and incredibly diverse marine environment that rivals tropical reefs yet the beauty that lies beneath the bay is little known,” said Sheree Marris, Project Curator and Aquatic Scientist.

“To show off the bay’s rich and colourful marine creatures on a grand scale is pretty amazing. I can’t wait to see people experience the Library’s dome as an immersive marine wonderland.”

State Library Victoria will be open from 7pm till 7am throughout White Night Melbourne, and all activities are free.
