Priceless collections and the prized architecture of State Library Victoria will be available in virtual reality to students and teachers around the world when the State Library Google Expedition launches in Mildura today.

Google Expeditions is created specifically for students and allows teachers to take their classes on immersive virtual field trips, providing a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom.

The State Library Victoria Expedition includes:

  • Ned Kelly’s armour and his famous Jerilderie letter
  • The Batman deed with people of the Kulin nation
  • Paintings of early Melbourne, indigenous elder William Barak, Peter Lalor leader of the Eureka Rebellion, William Buckley and Sir Redmond Barry (founder of the State Library)
  • A selection of other historically significant material
  • Virtual experiences of the library building

Speaking at the Nicholas Point Primary School launch, Andrew Hiskens, State Library Learning Services Manager said Expeditions was an excellent way to bring the library to regional Victoria.

“State Library Victoria is exactly that, a library for all Victorians. This technology allows us to give people a library experience, wherever they live, and one that is highly engaging and educational. Because it was developed in partnership with our education team it can be used effectively in a classroom setting.

“Expeditions is a terrific example of how technology is transforming the education experience.”

Google’s Sean McDonell said he is “immensely excited to launch an Expedition with the State Library Victoria.

“This new platform gives students around the world access to Victoria’s rich and unique culture and history.”
