Father Christmas in Australia woodblock print

Father Christmas in Australia, David Syme and Co, 1882

Although we close on public holidays during the festive season, we will be open from 27–31 December. So those not racing out of Melbourne during the Christmas break might like to come explore our galleries, exhibitions and collections.

During the Christmas period the Nikon-Walkley Press Photography exhibition is on, showcasing the year in photojournalism with images from Australia’s top press photographers. Our major exhibition Bohemian Melbourne explores a who’s who of Melbourne’s creative free spirits, from Marcus Clarke to Mirka Mora and Nick Cave. It’s a fantastic journey through Melbourne’s smoky salons and backstreets, tracing the lives of rebels, poets, artists and rock stars who shaped the character of the city. While here, head to our permanent exhibitions The changing face of Victoria – all about Victorian history – or Mirror of the world, which celebrates rare and historically significant books.

Or, simply come and spend the day delving into a special subject of interest – speak to one of our friendly librarians about any topic and they can point you in the direction of books, magazines, audio, video, images and more.
