State Library Victoria is opening up its collection to the world through a new partnership with global creative marketplace Redbubble. Artists around the world will be invited to participate in a major international competition to create new works that draw inspiration from the Library’s collection.

The new competition – “#createarthistory” – will make State Library Victoria’s collection of over 5 million items accessible to more people than ever before.  Drawing inspiration from three key themes of the Library’s collection – botanicals, weird and wonderful creatures and magic – Redbubble’s global community of artists will be invited to use the stunning collection materials to create new and innovative designs.

State Library Victoria CEO Kate Torney said the partnership was a natural fit for the two creative, Melbourne-based organisations.

“Redbubble is a fantastic Victorian success story and the Library is one of the state’s great icons. Together we are seeking to unlock the potential of the Library’s collections – we are encouraging people to explore, experiment and interpret items in new and playful ways.”

Redbubble CEO Martin Hosking said the partnership provides a new source of inspiration to Redbubble artists and consumers.

“Redbubble is in the business of connecting artists with their fans and providing unique and independent products. This partnership will enable our artists to explore a new world – the State Library’s Collection – and translate it into new and creative designs for our millions of users to enjoy.”

Cash prizes will be on offer and the winner will have their work displayed facing Swanston Street, exposing it to the 900,000 people who visit Melbourne’s CBD each day. Successful entrants will have merchandise featuring their designs sold in Readings stores and their work permanently added to the State Library’s Collection.

The competition opens Monday 18 September and runs until 10am, Monday 30 October 2017.
