The As modern as tomorrow photography competition winners were announced last Thursday at an event hosted by Broadsheet in Fitzroy, Melbourne.

Over the past three months, Broadsheet in collaboration with the State Library of Victoria, has asked photographers to create contemporary interpretations of the works of Melbourne’s great post-war photographers currently on show in the As modern as tomorrow: photographers in postwar Melbourne exhibition.

Broadsheet, which managed the entries, said ‘the response to the competition was overwhelming, with some fascinating interpretations of the existing images from the exhibition – from architectural forms and city buildings to women propped up at the bar where men once dominated the scene.’

The judges, Michaela Webb (Studio Round), photographer James Gerr and Broadsheet publisher Nick Shelton, selected three finalists whose works, ‘… drew something from the exhibition stylistically and compositionally, while invoking a modern perspective.’

First Prize

Koray Kilicli for his interpretation of Wolfgang Sievers’ ‘ICC House’ (1958). Koray has won $1,500 credit for fine art printing courtesy of michaels Camera Video Digital.

Third Prize

Jessie DiBlasi for her interpretation of Wolfgang Sievers’ ‘Club Bar at the Menzies Hotel’ (1965). Jessie has won $1,000 credit for fine art printing courtesy of michaels Camera Video Digital.
