The As modern as tomorrow photography competition winners were announced last Thursday at an event hosted by Broadsheet in Fitzroy, Melbourne.
Over the past three months, Broadsheet in collaboration with the State Library of Victoria, has asked photographers to create contemporary interpretations of the works of Melbourne’s great post-war photographers currently on show in the As modern as tomorrow: photographers in postwar Melbourne exhibition.
Broadsheet, which managed the entries, said ‘the response to the competition was overwhelming, with some fascinating interpretations of the existing images from the exhibition – from architectural forms and city buildings to women propped up at the bar where men once dominated the scene.’
The judges, Michaela Webb (Studio Round), photographer James Gerr and Broadsheet publisher Nick Shelton, selected three finalists whose works, ‘… drew something from the exhibition stylistically and compositionally, while invoking a modern perspective.’
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who submitted entries.
The State Library gratefully acknowledges the generous support of michaels who provided the wonderful prizes and the outstanding work of Broadsheet in coordinating the competition.
Selected works will exhibited at michaels in October.
