Vicnet  has won the Best Diversity Initiative of 2009 in the inaugural Australia and New Zealand Internet Best Practice Awards.

These international awards, organised by auDA (.au Domain Administration) in collaboration with InternetNZ, recognise the work of organisations, businesses, groups and individuals in making the internet a more secure, open, accessible and diverse place for all users.

In recent years, Vicnet has actively promoted and facilitated internet use in the many Victorian communities that have a limited presence online. The judging panel specifically noted Vicnet’s contribution to communities whose first language is not English.

Vicnet’s award-winning activities include:

  • culturally and linguistically diverse initiatives which facilitate the access and delivery of multilingual content online such as MyLanguage, Open Road and the Senior Surfers Program
  • production of publications and reports such as Community Languages Online, New Communities Emerging Content
  • participation in projects such as the Vicnet-Monash University Translation and Technology Project which researched Australian multilingual web content and provided recommendations on how to improve multilingual online communication across government
  • delivery of social inclusion ICT projects for government including the Skills.Net Roadshow, and the Public Internet Access Program
