James Gobbo, 1955, Italian Historical Society Collection

State Library Victoria is saddened by the passing of Sir James Gobbo, AC, CVO, QC., 25th Governor of Victoria.

Sir James made an enormous contribution to Victoria as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria and later, Lieutenant-Governor then, Governor of Victoria.

Sir James was a great champion of libraries serving as Chairman of the Council of the National Library of Australia and the inaugural patron of State Library Victoria’s Redmond Barry Society, which supports the Library’s work through bequests. Sir James’ generous and enthusiastic support of libraries as institutions working for the public good will be greatly missed.

The Library thanks Sir James for his life of service and extends deep condolences to Lady Shirley Gobbo and family for their loss.

Victorians are welcome to pay tribute to Sir James’ legacy at his state funeral at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Tuesday 16 November.

  1. A thorough gentleman. Kind, gracious, mentoring, and encouraging. The world is a much lesser place for his passing.
