You can now search specifically for online newspaper articles in our enhanced News Articles search, providing access to millions of articles from hundreds of newspaper titles from all over the world.

The search will provide you with access to full text news articles from papers included in multiple online research databases, however the majority of the articles are text only and include neither pictures nor ads.

To access the news articles search page, simply click News Articles in the menu bar in the catalogue.

As with finding any other type of material in the Library catalogue, you can search for news articles by keywords, article titles or authors and you can further refine your search results by applying subject, creation date or journal (newspaper) title filters from the options available to the right of the results list.

Because of the sheer number of news articles included in the search results, it can sometimes be difficult to find content from Australian newspapers. To help you find articles in specific Australian newspaper titles, we’ve provided a list of ISSNs (International Standard Serial Numbers) for some of the most popular Australian newspapers on the News Articles search landing page. You can combine one or more ISSNs with any other search terms to find articles within any of the listed Australian newspaper titles.

For example, to find articles about the AFL in the Herald Sun, type the following into the News Articles search bar:

1038-3433 afl

If you want to find articles about the Ashes in either The Age or the Sydney Morning Herald, type the following into the News Articles search bar:

(0312-6307 OR 0312-6315) ashes

Note that the coverage of available issues varies from title to title; some titles include issues dating back to the 2000s while others extend back to the early- to mid-90s. International titles may have wider periods of coverage for the articles that are available online and several of the Library’s historical newspaper archives are included in the search, providing access to articles dating back to the 19th century.

To find digitised news articles from Australian newspapers published prior to 1955, access Trove.

More information about finding and accessing newspapers can be found in the Library’s newspaper research guides.
